Samwon Express, Puri Indah Mall - Jakarta

Finding a quick and light Korean feed in Sydney is much easier than it is here.
Bulgogi bibimbap from Samwon Express

Jakarta has many Korean restaurants, but almost none of the simple Korean stalls that are heaps in Strathfield. At least that's what I know so far, do tell me if you know places to get cheerful and quick Korean feed here!

Anyway, my mom had been talking about this Korean stall in Puri Indah Mall food court for sometime, saying that she loved their bibimbap (Korean mixed rice). I wasn't convinced, believing that I've had arguably one of the best bibimbap in Sydney. But curiosity successfully dragged me here.

Samwon Express is the mini version of Samwon House, a Korean restaurant located in Setiabudi One and Kebayoran Baru. This was the first time that I see a Korean restaurant in a food court stall like this in Jakarta.

The menu is limited but diverse enough. Side dishes such as kimchi, ddeokbokki and kimbap (Korean style sushi) are on the list, siding with meal boxes and of course, the bibimbap.

We started with ddeokbokki, which is pretty much my favourite Korean snack/street food ever. Unfortunately, it is insufficient in many parts. There are only a few thin rice cakes smothered in not-spicy-enough sauce, with heaps of veggies. There are much more veggies than the rice cakes, and I believe that it's not supposed to be like so. The sauce consistency is great, though, and it tastes passable.

Ddeokbokki (rice cake sin spicy sauce) - IDR 30,000 ($3.1)

The bulgogi bibimbap (hot stone pot rice with sliced beef and vegetables) delivered beyond my expectations. The portion will not guarantee 100% full belly, but it's surprisingly quite filling for me. While the vegetables are given generously and cooked well, the tender, flaky, and luscious sliced beef steals the spotlight. Along with the charred rice on the bottom of course.

Bulgogi bibimbap (hot stone pot rice with sliced beef and vegetables) - IDR 35,000 ($3.7)

I guess the mother is right this time. And I just found out a fact about me: I have the softest spot for Korean food, no matter in what form.

Rating: 3/5 (Worth the try)
Nice bibimbap and good selections of Korean dishes, quick service, afordable price.
