Mecca Espresso, Ultimo - Sydney

I walk past this cafe to uni everyday, and only start noticing the hype recently.
Brasiola, parmesan, and rocket panini

That makes me think, where have I been all this time?

To make things more interesting, I found out that Mecca Espresso was selected as winner of Best Cafe in the Sydney Morning Herald Good Cafe Guide.

So, on the first class break from uni, I went straight to the lively cafe which is housed on the corner of Harris St and Ultimo Rd.

I went there two days in a row, and that's a really good sign if you ask me. The first time was full house (as it was lunch time) and that makes it apparent that this elegant cafe is popular mostly among ABC employees, TAFE students, and uni students.

I was there the second time for a late breakfast, and there isn't many patrons around so I managed to snap some interior pics.

I really like the interior. It has a bit rustic ambiance, with all the wooden furniture and bricks wall. The tables and chairs are really simple, and they reminded me of some chairs from a canteen or school classes (I am sure I've seen them somewhere). There are one wide communal table, one bar-like seating with high stools, some smaller tables for two to four, and my fav part is the seating facing the street.

Another thing that I love about the place is that we can stay there for quite a long time enjoying our drinks while doing assignments, without the crew bugging or giving us annoying looks.

On the first visit, I was lured by the iced chocolate, and turned out that it was the best iced chocolate I have ever had in my life yet.

It is literally iced chocolate, as like chocolate syrup with ice cream and fresh milk. It was the first time for me having iced chocolate with one scoop of ice cream inside, and oh boy that is a pure foodgasm. The chocolate syrup with milk itself is light and not too sweet, and that's because the ice cream provides all the creaminess you may need. It's cold, creamy, chocolatey, and sweet.

I pointed the leg ham panini with cheese and dijon mustard randomly, curious about how a panini tastes like.

Toasted just how I love it, the panini has fluffy innards but uber crunchy outer part. The Swiss cheese is admirably gooey and stretchy, and thank God the mustard doesn't overwhelm the whole sandwich. All in all, this is a really good sandwich, the type that I'll have anytime.

On the second visit, as much as I wanted the iced chocolate again, I finally chose mocha to accompany my morning. It arrived with pretty latte art, and surprisingly mild enough for my taste buds. Too bitter at first, but after some sprinkles of sugar I can completely enjoyed my cup.

I was intrigued by the roast pork sandwich (lunch menu), but it wasn't 12 o'clock yet so they were still in the breakfast mode. A bit disappointed, so I settled on brasiola, parmesan, and rocket panini. Yes, another panini. I love it.

This one has a bolder flavour than the first panini. The brasiola (rolled and tied Italian food item typically made from pork or beef, along with cheese, salt and flavoring) and the shaved parmesan are very thin, but contain much delicious flavour and saltiness. There are too many rockets to my liking, as the peppery leaves can be a bit bitter. Overall, this is another satisfying and toothsome sandwich we got here.

Mecca is one of the prettiest cafe I've ever been, and I strongly reckon that they should also win for their amazing iced chocolate.

Will I come back? Definitely, to try the other sandwiches apart from paninis.
