Bittersweet Corner, Plaza Indonesia - Jakarta

Trying red velvet is one of my 2012 resolutions.

So this is me, completing one. How I decided to try the red velvet from Bittersweet Corner started when I asked Urukyu, a fellow foodie, if there is any good red velvet sold at Plaza Indonesia. She recommended this place, and there I went.

My visit is just a quick stop, as the father had so many stuff to attend to at the mall. A bit hard finding the patisserie, as it is, literally, a small corner in another small store called Perennials. The tiny spot is almost like a secret place, isolated and discreet on a quiet corner of the mall. I don't think I will ever find the place if I wasn't looking.

Despite the tiny space, I fell in love instantly with the interior and setting. It is utterly cute, with one or two large mirrors, and adornments involve many flowers.

It is bright too, with exclusive view to the bustling M. H. Thamrin street. Nothing fancy about the seating but I think using transparent chairs is a brilliant idea.

I would have ordered one drink if I wasn't that rushed. I noticed that they use TWG tea, which is great, but has a significant impact to the price tags.

Cupcakes and tarts are just a part of the display cabinet, as it also shows off the macarons and sliced cakes. There are only four macarons available that early ( I went there at about 10 a.m.); strawberry, oreo, green tea, and grape. I knew I may regret this later, but I didn't get one. The price really turned me off, IDR 10,000 ($1.05) for one. And the size does not justify the price, so I skipped the macarons this time.

Chocolate caramel tart comes in two sizes, the big and the small. I went for the small one, just in case I don't like it.

I should have taken the big one.

It is exquisite. The tart base is very crumbly but still hold its form very well, chocolatey with the subtlest hint of bitterness. The sweetness will be provided by the gooey liquid gold on top. The caramel is heavenly gooey and sweet, but not too sweet to make you feel like you have to share this dessert. No, you definitely do not want to share this.

Now, the red velvet. In case you didn't know, red velvet cake is a cake whose ingredients include cocoa, buttermilk, and beetroot, although some cakeries have chosen to use red food colouring rather than the natural beetroot. I have read too many reviews about red velvet, and now is the time for me to try it for the first time. I really wonder how a cake made with beetroot tastes like.

The red velvet cupcake is bright red, topped with swirls of cream cheese frosting, along with red crispy crumbs and a micro red heart on the very top.

I don't taste any hint of beetroot. Is that how a red velvet supposed to taste? Or do they use red food colouring? Nevertheless, I really like the cupcake, moist and still warm inside. I love the sweetness balance too, but the cream cheese frosting is off-putting for me. It's to milky for my low-milk-tolerance taste buds, and the cream taste doesn't suit well for my tongue. However, I do think that red velvet lovers will love this cupcake.

Having tried the red velvet, I think I have to adjust more with it. I really don't mind eating the cake alone, without the cream cheese frosting. In any rate, I think Bittersweet Corner is a great cafe that offers good treats for your afternoon tea time. A sweet-tooth paradise, indeed.

Rating: 3.5/5 (Really worth the try)
I would really love to give higher rating if only the cakes aren't that pricey. The ambiance is really great, service is very polite and helpful, great sweet treats.
