Hakata Ikkousha, Jakarta

Many people are talking about this place nowadays..

..and a friend of mine said that this place has the best ramen he has ever tasted. Curious, and actually craving Mappen, I decided to give it a try. I think Hakata Ikkousha or Rumah Bahagia Pertama is a rather new restaurant in Muara Karang area. It's a branch from the similar restaurant in Japan.

The restaurant's a wee bit hard to be found, cause I was expecting huge banner and boards, luckily I didn't blink hehee. I went there about 10 a.m. and had to wait until about 10.30 a.m. because it's not even open yet. Turned out that it's a great idea to arrive early, cause when I went back at 10.30 the place's almost packed. Really it only had few more tables. Gosh how good is the ramen then if people are like crazy eating here?

The interior is wood-based, so the flooring is wood, also the tables, chairs, etc. It feels like being at a ramen shop in Japan. The also have one smoke catcher on every table.

Their kitchen is an open kitchen, the customers can see clearly how the chefs are making the ramen. I've heard that few of the chefs are really Japanese, and I also noticed one man only speaks to the restaurant owner in Japanese. I think I saw his photos on the restaurant wall. Oh well, having Japanese chef doesn't always mean the ramen would be delicious right?

And o yeah they have 60 employees in this small restaurant, I can see most of them just bludging around the corner lol. Sometimes they yelled few Japanese words to the ingoing and outgoing customers. But the great things are that the tables are cleaned in no time, and the refill service is fast and generous.

Reading the huge menu, I found out that they serve Hakata ramen, a kind of ramen from Hakata city located north west of Kyushu, Japan. It is said that the main characteristic of Hakata ramen is the white, thick soup that is made from pork bones, also called Tonkotsu (pork bone) soup/ramen.

They also explain that they use chicken bones, vegetables, and fish to make a delicious, thick broth. Apparently, all of the ingredients they use come from Indonesia.

The ramen menu really varies. From the special ramen, to the tuke men (ramen with dipping soup), and even ramen with Padang style soup, this one's very Indonesian. They even give great options of extra topping, from the sexy soft boiled egg (ni tamago), pork and chicken slices, and butter. Yeah you read right, butter. Gosh that really tempted me.

On the wooden table there were several condiments, such as sesame oil, chilli oil, soy sauce, and chilli powder. But my fav was the raw garlic set, complete with the crusher. Yuumm.

The cold ocha is the most ordered drink I reckon. The price includes free refill so maybe that's why it's chosen. Every time the waitress sees our glass is half-empty, she will offer the refill right away. She just won't stop unless we ask her to.

The parents ordered the same dish, sara udon (Japanese fried noodles). The taste was kinda like cap cay (Chinese style stir fried veggies), only a bit spicier. It has chicken, prawns, cabbage, corn kernels, onions, and chopped shallots. The chicken slices and prawns are quite generous given, and I love the chewy noodles. The gravy is very tasty too.

Sara udon - IDR 28,000 ($3.1)

I ordered ramen babi spesial (special pork ramen) cause it seemed like this is their signature menu. It's so FREAKIN delicious. The broth is very thick and tasty, it makes any ramen broth I've ever had tastes like water. Well okay, maybe not water, but you get the idea right?

At first I thought I'll need more pork slices since there are only two slices on my bowl. But after tasting the soup I was positive that I don't need any more pork slices or butter, as this soup is wonderfully delicious and adequately salty for me. I put some crushed garlic and it's even better. And look I also got one egg, I mean one lovely, gooey-yolk soft boiled egg. I also love the thin noodles, everything is just so awesome. The only hitch was the soup is a bit too oily for me. I don't complain though because it's so awesome.

Ramen babi spesial - IDR 38,000 ($4.2)

The brother got ramen ayam spesial (special chicken ramen) which is also amazingly luscious. This ramen has chopped wood ear mushroom on top, the thing I'd love to be on my ramen too. The broth is different from mine, this one's lighter and less oily. The bro doesn't like soft boiled egg so guess what, I got TWO soft boiled eggs. Maximum bliss.

They don't have a wide options of dessert, but three scoops of smooth chocolate ice cream are a good way to finish a scrumptious meal don't you think?

My craving is satisfied and I'm so glad there's a great ramen restaurant in town. Having Japanese chefs makes a difference I guess? Oh BTW, the owner said they they are opening a branch soon, and that's the reason why they have so many employees. Oh come on and open a branch nearer to my house please!

Best ramen I've had in Jakarta, service is fast and helpful, place can be very crowded during rush hour, price is acceptable.

    I wouldn't recommend this if you didn't like garlic, though, since the depth of the flavor mostly come from the garlic~

    Nice post here. I tried the ramen last week after reading your blog.. The ramen blew me away.. It was very very delicious!

    Do you know the owner? He is a Japanese? I have been trying to ask for his phone number, but I failed. I want to ask him if he wants to open the ramen in Surabaya..

  7. you should try this Japanese restaurant called Sushi Grill at Meruya Ilir area, across the banks. They don't specialise in ramen but the food is quite good and really cheap I think!
