Bakmi Gajah Mada, Kota - Jakarta

So this noodle restaurant is really well known here.
Black pepper chicken noodles with fried wonton

It's my family and my best friend's fav, so I am very familiar with bakmi Gajah Mada or Gajah Mada noodles.

Bakmi Gajah Mada has been serving since 1959, and from the website I know that they already have 22 outlets in Jakarta, Tangerang, and Bekasi. It's not surprising since a lot of mall in Jakarta has this famous noodle outlet.

The outlets are everywhere, but that day the big family and I went to its biggest branch in Gajah Mada, Kota (City) area. The place was very packed that day, and the troublesome parking turned me off a bit.

Clockwise: cutlery, drink promotion, a chair

The place is actually comfy, less modern-styled than the other outlets at malls. Surprisingly, it didn't take too long to have our order delivered to the table.

The drinks were first to arrived, my lemonade blush which has pink jelly cubes and really refreshing sour taste can really lift me up, especially on these ridiculously hot days in Jakarta. Iced lemon tea is also good, not too sweet and has a bit of sourness.

Lemonade blush (IDR 10,000 - $1.1) and iced lemon tea (IDR 7,000 - $0.7)

The dad ordered hot tea, which I believe tasted ordinary. I just can't believe he ordered HOT tea.

Hot tea - IDR 5,000 ($0.5)

Moving on to our appetizers, it was my first time trying their fried siu mays (deep fried chicken and shrimp siu mays). They are crunchy outside, and tasty as well. However, I can't find any prawn or chicken chunks inside, or maybe they mince them really well.

Fried siu mays - IDR 15,000 ($1.6)

Now here's my fav menu from Bakmi GM. Fried wontons; glorious golden and perfectly crunchy, with moderate chicken filling in the middle. These wontons are a must-order menu, they are best enjoyed with..

Fried wontons (10 pieces) - IDR 19,000 ($2.1)

..the sour and sweet sauce. They are irresistible and so moreish. Believe me.

Dip it yeaahh

By the time the main meals arrived, I was already half full with the siu mays and the wontons. The yi fu mie (deep fried noodles drenched with stir fried veggies and gravy) my mom ordered whet my appetite a bit, the noodles look deliciously crunchy. I didn't get to try it, but my mom said it used to be more delicious.

Yi fu mie - IDR 31,000 ($3.4)

And then they ordered meatballs soup. It's okay.

Meatballs soup - IDR 13,500 ($1.5)

I ordered my all-time fav noodle dish from Bakmi GM, bakmi ayam lada cha-cha or Cha-Cha black pepper chicken noodles. It has been my fav because it is hot. It's the spiciest noodles menu from this restaurant I reckon. I'd actually prefer if the noodles are much thicker, but thin noodles are their signature, what can I say.  It is tasty and spicy as usual, with enough minced black pepper chicken atop. The spiciness of this dish still can make my tongue dance.

Bakmi ayam lada cha cha - IDR 15,500 ($1.7)

Bakmi GM special (special GM noodles) is said to be special because they add juicy mushrooms with the chicken. I still prefer my spicy noodles. But for those who has low-chilli-tolerance-level, this one's recommended. The soup which comes with the noodles is surprisingly very tasty and savoury.

Bakmi GM spesial - IDR 17,500 ($1.9)

In the end, I can't finished my noodles due to my high consumption of the appetizers.
In the end, I still want the fried wontons.

Rating: 4/5 (Recommended)
Great noodles and fried wontons, old-school environment but very clean, service OK, affordable price.
